SPELLING STYLIZATION: THE MALAYSIAN WAY

Abstract

This study highlights a segment of a larger study that explores the discourse of social network sites.  Social network sites such as Twitter, Facebook and MySpace have become such fascinating social media used as distinct mediums of social interactions with new and inventive forms of language generated.  Creative aspects of language in online interaction are still under explored particularly in communication between bilingual and multilingual speakers of English.  This article explores the linguistic creativity of a group of Facebook users in Malaysia based on 700 Facebook postings.  It investigates the creativity of the users in stylizing their spelling.  The study reveals that Malaysians stylized the spelling convention and created their own unique spelling styles in addition to the common English spelling seen online.
